Dragon Boat - May 15th

by Pauline

In August every year, there is a race of the Dragon Boat in Corona Park, Flushing. It comes from my nation, China. In China, the Dragon Boat is celebrated on May 15th. It has a long history.

The Dragon Boat commemorates a famous poet. He wanted to save the nation and he died in the river. People put rice and other food into the river to keep the fish away the poet. On May 15th, people of China usually eat zhong and paddle a dragon boat to commemorate the poet. There are many dragon boats on the river. These dragon boats come from every city. There is a competition for the strongest boat. The group of men must paddle the dragon boat to the tiger together. The first to get to the tiger gets the gold medal. People like the sport because to succeed must work by a team, not a man.
