Aurora's Story

MY FIRST DAY IN NEW YORK

I came to the United States in February 2005. I came by airplane. I bought my ticket, it cost $ 1,000.00. I brought any suitcase. I brought my dreams, and blue jeans, a blouse, a pair of tennis shoes, and a coat. My young brother met me at the airport. I felt scared, and at night I drank too many beers. I was tired. I knew my brothers and my sisters. In the city, I saw the biggest constructions. I bought some clothes and a pair of shoes in my first week. Okay my brother did for me because I had no money. I found my first job at Mac Donald's. I began to study English 2 months after I arrived in Las Vegas Nevada.
Sincerely,
Aurora Ruiz.

Carlos' New York Story

My First Day in New York
I came from Ecuador to New York. The day was Tuesday, November 19, 2003. When I left my home, all of my family was crying and my girlfriend said, please don't leave. But I said to her, don't cry, I come back very soon. Then I took a plane from Quito, Ecuador and flew to JFK airport.

I took a yellow taxi. He charged me $50. I paid too much but I didn't know how much that cost. I brought with me just a black bag. I wore black pants and a blue jacket. My father was waiting for me in his apartment, and he met me. I cried the emotion.

My first day, I and my father went outside to walk. When we were walking on Roosevelt Avenue, we met with my father's friend and we said hello. Then my father asked him about a job for me. He said, yes, I have a job in a restaurant, the position is dishwasher. But I said, today I can't, please, I want to start tomorrow. He said, ok, start tomorrow at 11 a.m. I started to work, that wasn't easy.

Ciro's Story

When I arrived in this country, I came from Sao Paulo to Miami. My friend was waiting at the airport. We went to a bus station. I traveled by bus from Miami to Newark. I was very tired because the bus was uncomfortable.

I arrived in Penn Station of Newark. My godson was waiting. We hugged. I did 15 years ago we didn't see. It was Saturday, April 29, 2005. It was a dark, spring day at 9:00 p.m.

My godson picked me up in his car and we went to his home. There was celebrating Happy Birthday of his wife. After the party, I went to bed and cried too much. Why? I remembered my family in my country.

Now I am sure that I made the right decision. I am more peaceful.

Ewa's Story

November 6th. Time 4:30 p.m. The airplane landed at JFK. First time. I was in the Immigration Department and they made for me pictures and squeezed fingers. After 1.5 hours, I was free. I came to the U.S. 10 years ago. My family met me at the airport. When I came to home from JFK, I looked at the city. For me, everything was very special. I asked questions. Where is beautiful NY? Where are the high rises? I looked. Nothing. For me, was a shock. Oddly city architecture, because, Europe has another city architecture. For me, the first impression of Maspeth, Queens, this is province.

I changed my opinion after two weeks when I saw Manhattan. Oh Yes. Middle Manhattan. I had a second shock. Wonder!!!

MY FIRST DAY IN NEW YORK
I came to New York on September 18 , 2000. I came by plane. My plane landed at John F. Kennedy airport. I paid $700.00 for my ticket. I brought two medium suitcases. I wore blue jeans, a red blouse, and black sneakers. I felt very happy. My friends Erica and her husband met me. They took me to their apartment in Queens. We rode the yellow taxicab. After I napped, we went to Manhattan. I was very impressed while I saw the skyscrapers. I saw people from different countries. I heard different languages. We went shopping and I bought some clothes. At night, we went to the movies, but I understood nothing. After we went to the movies, we went to the Italian restaurant. I ate a lot of food. The food upset my stomach. After that, we went back home. Before I slept, I took some medicine . It relieved
my upset stomach. After that I went to bed.

Silvia's Story

My First Day in New York
I took the decision to come to NY in 2006. The day was Thursday, January 18. It was winter day. I was afraid and shy because my trip was long and I didn't know anyone in the bus station. I was waiting for my brothers and my sister. When I saw them I felt very happy and the same time I felt little sad because I miss my parents, but no matter about the time because now I'm start to live a new life with my sister. I went to her apartment.

I brought with me a small suitcase and I was wearing pants and a sweater. I was excited because I saw the skyline of the city. It was a beautiful sight. After that I went to sleep. A few days later I found my first job in the cookie factory. Right now I'm a designer in the flower store. Right now, I think I took the right decision because I can help my parents and now I'm working and studying English. I feel great about learn a new language.
